Osimhen delivers again as Galatasaray claim Istanbul derby bragging rights

Victor Osimhen struck twice to settle a fierce Istanbul derby, but Galatasaray had to survive a spectacular Fenerbahce fightback to reclaim top spot in Turkey!

Victor Osimhen scored twice to inspire Galatasaray to a 2–1 victory over Fenerbahce in a fiercely contested Istanbul derby, extending the hosts’ unbeaten run in the Intercontinental Derby to five consecutive Turkish Süper Lig meetings.

The Nigerian striker struck in the 29th minute before adding a second just before half-time, giving Galatasaray a two-goal cushion at Rams Park. However, Irfan Kahveci’s spectacular second half finish ensured the contest remained alive, forcing the hosts to withstand sustained pressure before securing a victory that lifted them back to the top of the league.

It was another statement performance in a fixture where individual quality can shape the outcome. His two goals gave Galatasaray the advantage they needed, but the visitors made sure the closing stages were far more uncomfortable than the home side would have wanted.

Osimhen breaks the deadlock after frantic opening

The derby began with the intensity expected of a meeting between two of Turkish football’s biggest rivals. Physical challenges and early stoppages disrupted the opening exchanges, while both teams looked to establish control without allowing the opposition space to attack.

Galatasaray gradually created the more promising opportunities, with goalkeeper Ederson emerging as an early obstacle. Baris Yilmaz tested the Brazilian twice, including a low effort that was kept out by an athletic save, while Osimhen also threatened in the penalty area.

The Nigerian had already sent a free-kick header wide and failed to convert a rebound before the breakthrough finally arrived in the 29th minute.

Yilmaz supplied the decisive pass into the penalty area, finding Osimhen in a dangerous position. The striker needed little time to make the opportunity count, driving a powerful shot into the bottom-right corner beyond Ederson.

It was the reward for Galatasaray’s growing pressure and a demonstration of the sharp finishing that makes Osimhen such a threat inside the box.

Fenerbahce had opportunities of their own during the opening half. The visitors continued to probe, while Galatasaray goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir had to remain alert as the contest swung between both penalty areas. Osimhen, however, was not finished.

After his opening strike, Osimhen continued to trouble Fenerbahce’s defense, looking for opportunities to exploit gaps around the penalty area. Ederson denied him with an excellent save from a close-range volley in the 38th minute, preserving the visitors’ hopes of reaching half-time with only a narrow deficit.

The goalkeeper’s resistance was eventually broken again just before the interval.

In the 44th minute, Galatasaray turned another attacking move into a second goal, with Osimhen getting the decisive touch to send the ball past Ederson. The finish doubled the hosts’ advantage and capped a productive first half for the Nigerian, whose movement and presence in the box repeatedly stretched Fenerbahce’s defence.

At 2–0, Galatasaray appeared well placed to manage the contest after the restart. Osimhen had delivered at the moments that mattered, and the hosts could approach the second half with a cushion that gave them greater control over the game. Yet the derby was far from settled.

Fenerbahce fight back with a spectacular goal

Galatasaray continued to create chances after the interval, with Alexey Batrakov seeing an attempt blocked before the hosts threatened again from set pieces and crosses.

Osimhen remained involved in the attacking action, while Ismail Jakobs came agonisingly close to extending the lead when his header struck the post in the 55th minute. The missed opportunity proved significant as Fenerbahce began to find a way back into the contest.

Cakir also had to produce an important save to deny Romelu Lukaku, keeping Galatasaray’s two-goal advantage intact as the visitors searched for a response.

That response arrived in the 62nd minute. Irfan Kahveci connected with the ball inside the penalty area and executed a spectacular scissor kick, sending it beyond Cakir to reduce the deficit to 2–1. The goal gave Fenerbahce renewed belief and transformed the closing stages into a tense battle for control.

With the gap reduced to one, Galatasaray could no longer afford to treat the contest as a game they had already won. The visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser, while the hosts looked for a third goal that would remove the uncertainty.

Even as Fenerbahce pressed, Osimhen had an opportunity to restore Galatasaray’s two-goal advantage.

In the 80th minute, the striker received an inch-perfect pass inside the box and fired towards goal, but his effort narrowly missed the right post. It was a significant chance to settle the derby, and its failure to find the net ensured the visitors remained within striking distance.

Galatasaray made several substitutions as the match entered its final stages, with Osimhen withdrawn in the 88th minute and Wilfried Singo brought on in his place.

The Nigerian left having supplied both goals, but his departure did not bring an end to the danger.

Fenerbahce continued to search for an equaliser, and Milan Skriniar came close with a header from close range in the 90th minute. Galatasaray managed to prevent the effort from finding the net, preserving their slender advantage during a nervy finish.

Leroy Sane then tested Ederson with a powerful effort, while Fenerbahce were unable to make their remaining opportunities count. Kerem Akturkoglu sent a late freekick high over the bar, and the final whistle confirmed Galatasaray’s 2–1 victory.

The result extended Galatasaray’s unbeaten run in the Intercontinental Derby to five consecutive Süper Lig meetings, strengthening their position in a rivalry that carries enormous significance for both clubs and their supporters.

It also marked Galatasaray’s fourth victory in their last five matches across all competitions, according to the supplied match report, allowing them to reclaim top spot in the league. Fenerbahce, meanwhile, remained fifth after recording just one win in their previous four league matches.
