Members of the Rivers United squad were left shaken on Thursday after their team bus was involved in a road accident while en route to Awka for their Federation Cup fixture against Nasarawa United.
The incident occurred shortly after the team departed its camp, along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt.
Club officials confirmed that several players and members of the backroom staff sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash, though no life-threatening injuries or fatalities were recorded.

In a statement, Rivers United reassured supporters that all affected individuals were receiving medical attention and were in stable condition.
“The safety, health and well-being of our players and officials remain our utmost priority. We can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported,” the club said.

The club added that it would continue to monitor the situation and provide further updates on travel arrangements and the status of their upcoming Federation Cup fixture.
The incident comes at a sensitive moment in Rivers United’s season. The Port Harcourt based side had secured their place in the round of 16 earlier in the week following a narrow 3-2 win over Rangers International.

They were due to face Nasarawa United in Awka as part of their push for silverware in the Federation Cup, their last remaining chance for a trophy this campaign after narrowly missing out on the NPFL title.

Rivers United finished second in the league with 67 points, just one point behind champions Rangers, underlining how tightly contested the season had been.
Attention now turns away from football to the wellbeing of the squad, as the club works with authorities and medical teams to ensure a safe recovery for those involved before any sporting decisions are made.
