NWFL: Delta State Government dissolves Delta Queens after disappointing season

Delta State dissolves Delta Queens FC’s entire structure—management, coaches, and players after a disappointing NWFL season

The Delta State Sports Commission has taken the extraordinary step of dissolving the entire structure of Delta Queens Football Club, following a dismal campaign in the 2025 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) and early elimination from the Women’s FA Cup.

In a statement released on Thursday by the Commission’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Franka Okonma, it was confirmed that the club’s management board, coaching staff, and entire playing squad have been dismissed with immediate effect.

The drastic measure comes in response to what has been widely regarded as a disappointing and underwhelming season for the Asaba-based club, historically one of the powerhouses of Nigerian women’s football.

Led by Peter Dedevbo—a respected figure in Nigerian football and former head coach of the country’s U-20 women’s national team (the Falconets)—Delta Queens failed to qualify for the NWFL Super Six, the championship play-offs that determine the season’s ultimate winner.

The club’s poor form saw them lose three home matches and suffer several defeats on the road, culminating in a shock FA Cup exit at the hands of Ibom Angels in Enugu.

“The dissolution is with immediate effect,” the statement read. “This decision has been taken to allow for a complete overhaul of the team’s structure and to reposition the club for greater efficiency and competitiveness moving forward.”

The Delta State Sports Commission has pledged to rebuild the club from the ground up, with plans already in motion to appoint a new management board, technical crew, and recruit a fresh crop of players ahead of the next footballing campaign.

Delta Queens are six-time Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) champions and five-time winners of the Women’s FA Cup. The club most recently clinched the NWFL title in the 2022/2023 season.
