Liverpool have suffered an injury setback ahead of their Premier League clash with Manchester City on Sunday, with Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo ruled out of the encounter.
Andoni Iraola confirmed the absence of the attacking duo during his pre-match press conference on Friday, revealing that both players picked up injuries during the international break.
“Alex Isak and Gakpo won’t play, not ready unfortunately for us. Injuries in the break,” Iraola said. “You always hope the doctor doesn’t call you but we have been unlucky. They are not going to be involved.”
Gakpo is dealing with an ankle injury sustained following a bad tackle. Iraola explained that the forward is working on his recovery but will not be fit in time for Sunday’s match.
“Gakpo has an ankle injury, a matter of him dealing with the pain. A bad tackle, I think. He is working but not for Sunday,” he added.
Isak, meanwhile, is suffering from a thigh injury. However, Iraola indicated that neither injury appears to be long-term, although both players remain unavailable for the weekend fixture.
“Isak has a thigh injury. Whenever he feels ready, they don’t look like long-term injuries. But they are not ready for Sunday,” he said.
