Nigeria’s Flamingos were forced to withstand a tense finish in Salé, Morocco, as their pursuit of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title took another step forward on Thursday.
The Nigerian youngsters had built a commanding position in their Round of 16 clash, but Mexico’s late response turned the closing minutes into a test of their composure. The Flamingos had to protect their advantage through an unusually extended period of stoppage time before their passage to the quarterfinals was confirmed.
The victory means Nigeria will continue their campaign in Morocco, with a meeting against Venezuela now on the horizon.
The Flamingos gradually found their way into the contest before Oluebube Umejiaku gave Nigeria the breakthrough in the 40th minute.
Her goal put the Nigerian side ahead after an opening period in which both teams had created opportunities. Nigeria carried the 1–0 lead into half-time, with eight minutes added at the end of the first half.
Mexico responded with two substitutions before the interval, introducing Nicole Jimenez for Mia Urbano and Naomi Rojo for Bianka Arredondo as they sought to change the momentum.
Nigeria, however, maintained their advantage after the restart and continued to look for a second goal that would give them greater control of the tie.

Mary Dunstan provided that cushion in the 71st minute, doubling Nigeria’s lead and putting the Flamingos 2–0 ahead with less than 20 minutes of normal time remaining.
The goal appeared to place Nigeria in a strong position to see out the contest. Mexico made further changes in response, including the withdrawal of captain Citlalli Reyes in the 75th minute, while Nigeria also adjusted their line-up.
Precious Oscar had replaced Oluwakemi Adegbuyi in the 66th minute as the Flamingos managed their approach to the closing stages.
But the two-goal margin did not bring a quiet finish. Nigeria made two further substitutions in the 87th minute, with Chidera Chidi replacing Queen Joseph and Awawu Bashiru coming on for Dunstan.
Mexico continued searching for a way back and finally found one in the 90+10th minute. Emily Delgado scored from a Camila Campos assist to cut Nigeria’s lead to 2–1.
The late goal gave Mexico fresh hope and raised the pressure on the Flamingos, who still had to navigate the remaining stoppage time.
Nigeria held firm despite the late push and a corner in the closing stages. The referee eventually ended the match at 90+17, confirming a 2–1 victory for the Nigerian side.
Umejiaku and Dunstan had supplied the goals, but the Flamingos’ ability to protect their advantage under late pressure proved just as important to their progress.
Venezuela await in the quarterfinals
The win takes Nigeria into the last eight, where they will face Venezuela on Sunday, November 1.
Venezuela booked their place with a 1–0 victory over Germany in the Round of 16, with Diana Bravo scoring the decisive goal.
Nigeria have now recorded three victories at this edition of the tournament, equalling their highest number of wins in a single FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign.
