Nigerian international striker Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone emergency surgery after suffering a serious abdominal injury during Nottingham Forest’s Premier League match against Leicester City on Sunday.
The incident occurred late in the game when Awoniyi collided heavily with the goalpost while chasing a late winning goal.
The 27-year-old received several minutes of on-field treatment but attempted to continue playing. However, the full extent of the injury was discovered following a thorough assessment by the Forest medical team on Monday, and surgery was deemed necessary to address the specific nature of the injury.
According to reports, Awoniyi’s condition is not life-threatening, and the surgery was successful. Nevertheless, the injury is a significant blow to Nottingham Forest’s aspirations of qualifying for the Champions League. The Tricky Trees could still play in the Champions League if they win their final two games, but Awoniyi’s absence would be felt.

Awoniyi has struggled to build on his first season at Forest, where he netted 10 Premier League goals in 27 appearances. This season, he has played second fiddle to Chris Wood, who has been Nuno Espírito Santo’s preferred choice up top. Awoniyi’s goalscoring ability will be vital for Forest’s success in the final games of the season.
Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis expressed frustration over the incident, reportedly confronting manager Nuno Espírito Santo over the decision not to substitute Awoniyi earlier.
Marinakis later clarified on social media that the frustration stemmed from the passion everyone at the club has for the team.

“Everybody – coaching staff, players, supporters, and including myself – we were frustrated around the injury of Taiwo and the medical staff’s misjudgement on Taiwo’s ability to continue the game,” Marinakis wrote on Instagram. “This is natural, this is a demonstration of the passion we feel for our club.”

The extent of Awoniyi’s injury and expected return are yet to be determined. Forest fans hope for his speedy recovery, and the club will need all their players, including Awoniyi, to be fit and firing on all cylinders if they are to achieve their goals.
The Premier League season enters its final stages and Nottingham Forest will be keeping their fingers crossed that Awoniyi makes a full recovery and returns to the pitch soon. With big games against West Ham United and Chelsea upcoming, Awoniyi’s fitness will be crucial for Forest’s Champions League aspirations.
In the meantime, Espírito Santo will have to look elsewhere for goals, potentially turning to Chris Wood or other attacking options. The Forest manager will hope that his squad can rally together and secure the necessary results to achieve their goals.
