Rangers have withdrawn from the 2026/27 CAF Champions League after citing financial constraints, dealing a major blow to the country’s continental representation.
The Premier League champions confirmed its decision on Tuesday, explaining that it would not participate in Africa’s premier club competition because of the significant financial demands involved.
Bo Rangers secured their place in the tournament after winning the Sierra Leone Premier League title, earning the right to represent the West African nation in the CAF Champions League qualifiers.
However, despite qualifying on merit, the club has now opted against taking part, saying it is unable to meet the financial requirements associated with competing in the tournament.

The withdrawal leaves Sierra Leone without a confirmed representative in this season’s CAF Champions League unless the Sierra Leone Football Association and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) approve a replacement club.
The development comes just weeks after CAF confirmed the clubs that will participate in the preliminary rounds of the 2026/27 Champions League, with fixtures scheduled to begin in early September.
Bo Rangers’ withdrawal isa clear indication of financial challenges still confronting many African clubs, particularly those from smaller football nations, where the costs of continental travel, accommodation, logistics and player welfare can outweigh the financial rewards of participation.

The club’s absence will be a disappointment for supporters, having earned the opportunity to compete against the continent’s elite after another successful domestic campaign.
Attention will now turn to Sierra Leone’s football authorities and CAF to determine whether another eligible club will be nominated to take the country’s place before the qualifying rounds get underway.
