Abia Warriors have confirmed the return of head coach Imama Amapakabo after the completion of his suspension, with the experienced tactician already leading preparations for the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign.
The former Super Eagles assistant coach was suspended by the club’s management towards the end of last season following Abia Warriors’ 2-0 home defeat to Kun Khalifat in a Matchday 37 Oriental Derby. Goalkeeper coach Alloy Agu Shorunmu was subsequently placed in interim charge as the club concluded the campaign.
However, Abia Warriors Executive Chairman John Obuh has revealed that the matter has now been resolved, with Amapakabo having resumed duties weeks ago as the club turns its attention to the new season.
Speaking on Wednesday to completesports, Obuh said the club remained committed to stability and continuity despite the disagreement that led to the coach’s suspension.
“Imama has resumed duties. He returned to his duty post weeks ago. Right now, he’s preparing the club for the 2026/2027 season,” Obuh said.
“We’re a club driven by the spirit of continuity. Yes, there are bound to be disagreements, even in a family. Such issues are always resolved so the family can move forward.”

The chairman added that the club’s immediate focus is on building a stronger side capable of improving on last season’s performance.
“Right now, our preoccupation is the coming season, and we believe that with continuity, team spirit and by correcting the mistakes of last season, we can make a good impact.”
Technical crew to determine pre-season programme
Obuh also disclosed that responsibility for planning the club’s pre-season activities lies with Amapakabo and his technical crew.
According to him, the coaching staff will submit a comprehensive preparation schedule, including proposed pre-season tournaments, for management’s review and approval.
“The technical crew will present their schedule, including pre-season tournaments. We’ll study it and, if necessary, give our approval,” he said.

Amapakabo’s return ends weeks of uncertainty over his future and provides continuity for a side preparing for another NPFL campaign. The former Enugu Rangers title-winning coach, who also previously managed Rwandan club Etoile de l’Est, will now be tasked with guiding Abia Warriors to a stronger showing in the 2026/27 season after last year’s disappointing finish.
