At just 18, Emmanuel Chukwu is already making waves as Nigeria’s defensive rock at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
His commanding presence at the back has been instrumental in the Flying Eagles’ journey to the semifinals—where they dethroned champions Senegal—and secured a coveted spot in the upcoming U-20 World Cup.
But Chukwu isn’t just playing for the present; he’s on a mission to surpass Nigeria’s defensive greats. Inspired by the heartbreak of past Super Eagles defeats, particularly Argentina’s last-gasp victory in 2018, the Hoffenheim prospect is determined to rewrite Nigeria’s defensive narrative.
Unlike many young talents who idolize flashy attackers, Chukwu models his game after seasoned defenders like William Troost-Ekong and Kenneth Omeruo.

Studying their performances, he absorbs their strengths while vowing to avoid the mistakes that have haunted Nigerian defenses in crucial moments.
“I’ve been working towards it. I have a lot of football players who I admire. Mostly, I admire Troost-Ekong and Kenneth Omeruo,” Chukwu added.
“I do watch their games, most of their games against other countries. I do take time to watch their games and see a lot of them. I learn from them also.”
Beyond his technical growth, Chukwu’s mental discipline sets him apart. A deeply spiritual athlete, he begins matchdays with prayer, scripture readings, and visualization—rituals that ground him before stepping onto the pitch.
“What I do is, before a game, I wake up in the morning, say my prayers, most importantly, and then go for breakfast.
“Then, when I’m back from breakfast, I try as much as possible to get a nap for at least one hour or one hour 30 minutes before the game. And then I do read my Bible, because I need some scriptures, so when I go to the pitch, I remember them for the game.

“They give me confidence to play on the pitch. And then I take my time, envisioning the game two hours before the game.”

Chukwu’s rapid rise—from Nigerian academies to Hoffenheim’s youth setup—hints at a bright future. With a World Cup ticket secured, his ambitions are clear: lifting Nigeria’s first-ever U-20 World Cup trophy.
