Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have returned to the country and are now waiting on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to determine whether they will qualify for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations despite finishing runners-up at the WAFU B U-20 Championship.
The Nigerian youngsters arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja at about 7pm on Tuesday aboard an Air Côte d’Ivoire flight following their campaign in Côte d’Ivoire.
Nigeria’s hopes of defending their regional title ended on Sunday when they suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the WAFU B final in Yamoussoukro.
The result denied the seven-time African champions a third successive WAFU B title after their triumphs in 2022 and 2024.
It also left Nigeria’s continental qualification hopes in an unusual position because of the hosting arrangement for the next U-20 AFCON.
Ghana’s hosting creates qualification uncertainty
Ghana has been awarded hosting rights for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, meaning the Black Satellites qualify automatically for the tournament.
That development has created uncertainty around the number of qualification places available to the WAFU B zone.
The regional championship was structured as a qualifying competition for the continental tournament, with two WAFU B places traditionally available.
Burkina Faso claimed the regional title and would normally take one of those qualification spots, while Nigeria’s runners-up position would leave them needing another route.
With Ghana already guaranteed a place as hosts, Nigeria are hoping CAF will allocate an additional qualification slot to WAFU B.
Such a decision would allow the Flying Eagles to join Burkina Faso at the 2027 continental tournament.

Nigeria’s hopes are partly based on CAF’s handling of the 2025 U-20 AFCON, which featured 13 teams instead of the traditional 12-team field.
CAF’s official draw documentation confirmed the participation of 13 nations at the tournament in Egypt.
However, it remains uncertain whether the continental body will adopt a similar format for the 2027 edition or instead maintain its existing qualification structure, the decision will ultimately rest with CAF.
Meanwhile, The Flying Eagles remain the most successful nation in the history of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, having won the competition seven times, and have consistently been among Africa’s leading teams at youth level.
Missing the 2027 tournament would therefore represent a significant setback for a side with such a strong record in the competition.
Ghana’s hosting rights have already secured the Black Satellites’ place at the finals, while Burkina Faso have earned the WAFU B qualification ticket by winning the regional championship.

If CAF decides to expand the WAFU B allocation because Ghana’s automatic qualification has created an additional vacancy, the Flying Eagles could benefit as runners-up.
Until CAF makes its official pronouncement, Burkina Faso remain the only WAFU B team certain of qualification through the regional competition, while Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2027 U-20 AFCON remain uncertain.
