Nigeria have been handed a second-round tie against either Mauritania or the Democratic Republic of Congo in the qualifying race for the 2027 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Egypt.
The draw, conducted by the Confederation of African Football on Tuesday, August 25, placed Nigeria among the teams that received a bye through the opening round.
Mauritania and DR Congo, meanwhile, must first meet in a two-legged first round tie, with the eventual winner earning a meeting with Nigeria.
The first round is scheduled for September 20 and October 6, 2026, while Nigeria’s second-round tie is scheduled for November 9 and 17.
Nigeria’s first match will therefore depend on which side emerges from the Mauritania-DR Congo contest.
The qualification campaign features 28 teams in the first round, with 14 winners joining 14 exempted nations in the second round.
After the second round, the 14 successful teams will be paired in the final qualifying round, with the seven aggregate winners joining hosts Egypt at the 2027 U-23 AFCON.
Nigeria’s potential route
Nigeria’s immediate concern will be the first-round meeting between Mauritania and DR Congo.
Whichever team advances will face the Olympic Eagles over two legs in November, with the aggregate winner progressing to the final qualifying round.

Should Nigeria overcome that hurdle, they will then face the winner of another second-round bracket involving Zambia and the winner of Sierra Leone versus Burkina Faso.
That means Nigeria could potentially face three different opponents on the road to Egypt, depending on how the opening rounds unfold.
The first round fixtures are scheduled to take place on September 20 and October 6, while the second-round matches will be played on November 9 and 17. The final qualifying round is scheduled for March 22 and 30, 2027.
Seven places up for grabs
Egypt will qualify automatically for the 2027 U-23 AFCON as hosts, leaving seven qualification places available to the rest of the continent.
The 2027 tournament will feature eight teams in total Egypt and the seven nations that successfully negotiate the qualifying campaign.
The competition carries additional importance because the U-23 AFCON serves as Africa’s pathway to the men’s football tournament at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The qualification would provide another opportunity for Nigeria to maintain the country’s strong tradition in Olympic football after the Olympic Eagles won gold at Atlanta 1996, silver at Beijing 2008 and bronze at Rio 2016.
