New Zealand part-timers Auckland City pulled off one of the most remarkable results in their history by holding South American giants Boca Juniors to a 1-1 draw at the FIFA Club World Cup in Nashville.
Christian Gray, a trainee teacher by day, was the unlikely hero, heading home a second-half equaliser that ensured the Oceania champions departed the tournament with pride, despite finishing bottom of their group.
Lautaro Di Lollo had earlier given Boca a fortunate lead after 25 minutes when his header struck the post, bounced off goalkeeper Nathan Garro,w and agonisingly crept over the line.

For much of the match, the Argentines dominated proceedings, keeping Auckland pinned back and patiently probing for a second goal.

Ten minutes into the second half, Gray rose to meet a corner and powered his header past Boca goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin, sparking jubilant celebrations from the Auckland bench and a small pocket of travelling fans.

The game was briefly halted after the equaliser due to adverse weather in the Nashville area, with players and officials forced off the pitch for over 40 minutes.
Despite being largely outclassed on paper and part-time in status, the New Zealand side showed resilience, tactical discipline, and spirit to earn a result that will go down in the club’s folklore.
