Relief for D’Tigress as NSC clears way for Afrobasket preparations in Abuja

Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have finally resumed camping in Abuja after the National Sports Commission (NSC) intervened to resolve a funding delay that had put their 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket participation in jeopardy.

The NBBF had faced a race against time after a month-long stall in preparations, with no tickets, no confirmed logistics, and the tournament in Côte d’Ivoire just days away.

But a timely move by the NSC has now revived the team’s build-up, as Nigeria targets a historic fourth consecutive title (4-peat).

Friendly matches against Kenya and Togo are now scheduled to go ahead in Abuja on July 19 and 20, serving as final tune-ups before the championship kicks off on July 26.

Earlier reports indicated that the NSC was supposed to release the necessary funds as early as May. The delays had left Nigeria trailing continental rivals like Senegal, who are already weeks into camp.

D’Tigress are the defending champions and one of the most dominant forces in African women’s basketball, having won the last three editions of the tournament.
