Dikko orders NFF to pay Super Falcons first before touching WAFCON prize money

NSC Chair Shehu Dikko has directed the NFF to pay Super Falcons their share of WAFCON 2024 prize money before accessing any CAF funds.

Chairman of Nigeria’s National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has ordered the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to prioritise payment to the Super Falcons players and crew from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 prize money before using any portion of it.

In a statement made to  journalist Osasu Obayiuwana on Saturday, Dikko said he had formally instructed the federation to allocate the players’ 30% share of the prize pool before accessing the remaining balance.

“I have given the NFF this instruction,” Dikko confirmed. “The players are entitled to a 30% share of whatever the NFF earn from the tournament.”

Even before Tuesday’s semi-final clash against South Africa or Senegal, Nigeria is already assured of a minimum payout of $300,000 for finishing fourth.

That figure could rise to $350,000 with a third-place finish, $500,000 for a silver medal, and $1 million if the Super Falcons win a historic 10th WAFCON title.

In addition to the 30% cut from CAF prize money, the NFF is also expected to honour its obligations to the players, including match bonuses and daily camping allowances, which are separate from the tournament prize share.

Meanwhile, after nearly two weeks of controversy and questions from fans and media, the long-delayed Nike-supplied WAFCON 2024 kits have finally reached the Super Falcons’ camp in Morocco.

The gear reportedly held up by Moroccan customs for 12 days has now been delivered and distributed to the squad. A source from within the camp confirmed that the players have received the kits, which were still in sealed boxes earlier this weekend.

The kit delay had earlier forced the team to train and play in older matchwear, raising concerns about logistics and preparation in Nigeria’s camp.
