Nigeria’s head coach, Justine Madugu, has praised the mental strength and unity of the Super Falcons after their dramatic 2–1 win over South Africa in the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Casablanca.
A stoppage-time winner from Michelle Alozie sealed the result for the nine-time African champions, who are now on the verge of a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
Madugu, who is leading the team to the final for the first time as head coach, admitted it was a game full of emotional swings, especially after South Africa pulled level from the penalty spot.
“The players’ morale was briefly shaken when we conceded, but they quickly regrouped, believed in themselves, and stayed focused,” Madugu said.
“We reminded them that the match isn’t over until the final whistle. Opportunities would still come, and we had to take them.”

The coach admitted he found it difficult to watch his team briefly lose control after the equaliser, but credited the players for responding to his message.

“At some point, we lost control and became careless. That was frustrating,” he admitted. “But as a coach, you must stay composed and focus on encouraging your players, not adding to their pressure. We gathered them, reminded them of what was at stake, and they responded well.”
Nigeria looked set to be dragged into extra time before Alozie’s lofted strike in the 94th minute stunned Banyana Banyana and sent the Falcons through to their 11th WAFCON final.

Madugu also commented on the emotional scenes at full-time, which included Rasheedat Ajibade breaking down in tears and declining to speak with the media.
“The game was intense, and when you work hard to achieve something and succeed, emotions overflow,” he said.

“Gabriella’s injury was painful. Everyone was concerned, even the opposing bench. We pray for her full recovery.”
The Super Falcons will now face host nation Morocco in Saturday’s final in Rabat, aiming to reclaim the title they last won in 2018 and further solidify their dominance in African women’s football.
