Kaizer Chiefs land Ighodaro, the first Nigerian signing since Akpeyi

Kaizer Chiefs have added to their attacking options with the signing of Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro on a free transfer.

The 24-year-old has agreed a two-year deal with the Soweto giants, with an option of a further year, after leaving Mamelodi Sundowns. He will wear the number 50 shirt.

Ighodaro joined Sundowns in 2021 from Abuja College in Nigeria but never made a competitive appearance for the club.

Instead, he spent loan spells at AmaTuks, Chippa United, SuperSport United and most recently AmaZulu, where he scored six goals in 27 outings last season.

Ighodaro is not the first Nigerian to feature for the Glamour Boys.

Former defender Muisi Ajao, known as “The Beast”, spent the 1997/98 season with Chiefs, helping them lift the Rothmans Cup (now the Telkom Knockout Cup).

More recently, goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi enjoyed a successful four-year spell at Naturena between 2019 and 2022.

The Super Eagles international made 69 appearances and kept 27 clean sheets before departing the club.

Across his PSL career, Akpeyi has played 191 matches with 66 clean sheets, turning out for clubs including Chippa United, Moroka Swallows and Marumo Gallants.

Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has been reshaping his squad ahead of the new campaign, with Ighodaro becoming the eighth new signing at Naturena.

He follows the arrival of Asanele Velebayi from Cape Town Spurs, while competition for places up front will also include Flavio Silva, who joined from Indonesian side Persebaya Surabaya.
