The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) 2025/26 season began in dramatic fashion as reigning champions Remo Stars were held 1-1 at home by Rivers United at MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta.
Rivers United drew first blood in the third minute when Aniekeme Pereskie Okon, facing his former club, headed Timothy Zechariah’s cross into the net.
The champions responded swiftly: just six minutes later, Victor Mbaoma finished off Samuel Anakwe’s precise pass to level the scores, marking his first NPFL goal for Remo Stars in over six years and his 16th for the club.
Mbaoma was forced off in the 21st minute after a knock, replaced by Malian Adama Goita, but the hosts continued to press.

Rivers nearly regained the lead when Michael Ibe’s free-kick struck the woodwork, while a flowing move ended with Goita’s shot blocked by a resilient defense.
The game ended in drama as Rivers defender Temple Emekayi was sent off in stoppage time for dangerous play.
