Ola Aina forced off as Forest take slim edge in all-English Europa semi final

An injury scare involving Ola Aina provided a worrying subplot as Nottingham Forest secured a narrow 1-0 win over Aston Villa in the first leg of their all English UEFA Europa League semi final at the City Ground.

Forest took a crucial advantage into the return leg but the sight of Aina leaving the pitch in the second half raised immediate concern.

The Nigerian defender had been a key part of Forest’s structure before being forced off in the 75th minute, disrupting the defensive rhythm that had kept Villa at bay for much of the contest.

Up until that point, Aina’s performance reflected his  importance, particularly in dealing with Villa’s attempts to stretch play and build through the flanks. His positioning and awareness helped limit clear-cut chances during sustained spells of possession from the visitors.

His departure, however, shifted the dynamic. Villa increased their urgency late on, pushing forward in search of an equaliser as Forest were forced to reorganise at the back.

The decisive moment of the tie came shortly before that late pressure, when a VAR review resulted in a penalty for Forest. Chris Wood stepped up and converted with authority, firing into the top corner to give the hosts the lead.

Villa continued to probe, with Youri Tielemans and Jadon Sancho both trying to force an opening, but Forest held firm to preserve their advantage.

While the result gives Forest a slender edge heading into the second leg, Aina’s early exit remains a key concern, with his condition likely to be closely monitored in the days ahead.
