Injury concerns force Nottingham Forest into major Taiwo Awoniyi decision

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi says his time at Liverpool, despite never playing a match, helped shape his development and mentality

Nottingham Forest are reportedly set to make a major decision on the future of Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi as the Nigerian enters the final year of his contract at the City Ground.

According to Football Insider, Forest’s hierarchy are expected to assess Awoniyi’s long-term future during the summer transfer window following another campaign disrupted by injuries and intense competition for places.

The 28-year-old has endured a frustrating season, but recent weeks have seen him force his way back into the starting lineup under manager Vítor Pereira.

Awoniyi delivered one of his standout performances of the season earlier this month against Chelsea, scoring twice in a memorable 3-1 victory that further boosted Forest’s push for Premier League survival.

The performance reminded supporters of the powerful striker who impressed immediately after joining Forest from Union Berlin in 2022.

In his debut Premier League season, Awoniyi scored 10 goals in 27 appearances and quickly established himself as one of Forest’s most important attacking players. However, recurring injury problems have repeatedly interrupted his momentum.

A groin injury sidelined the Nigerian international for two months during his first campaign, while further fitness setbacks limited him to just 20 Premier League appearances the following season.

Although the past two seasons have not brought any major long-term injuries, Awoniyi has struggled to cement a regular starting place due to strong competition from experienced striker Chris Wood and Brazilian forward Igor Jesus.

Despite those challenges, Awoniyi’s recent performances have earned praise, with Pereira reportedly encouraging improved displays from the Nigerian forward as Forest secured their Premier League status.
