Fresh uncertainty has emerged over the long-awaited Super Eagles debut of teenage sensation Zadok Yohanna after Swedish club AIK suggested they could refuse to release the player for Nigeria’s upcoming Unity Cup campaign in London.

The 18-year-old forward had been widely reported as one of the standout debutants selected by Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle for the invitational tournament, with sources earlier confirming that an official invitation letter had already been sent by the Nigeria Football Federation.

Chelle had identified the Unity Cup as an opportunity to assess emerging talents, foreign-based prospects and standout Nigeria Premier Football League performers ahead of bigger international fixtures later in June against Poland and Portugal.

Zadok’s inclusion quickly generated excitement among Nigerian fans after his explosive breakthrough season in Sweden with AIK, where the teenager has already registered two goals and three assists in seven Allsvenskan appearances.

However, despite the growing anticipation around his potential international debut, AIK officials have now cast serious doubt on whether the youngster will be allowed to join up with Nigeria.

Speaking on the situation, AIK recruitment manager Miika Takkula confirmed that the club had received communication regarding the invitation but stressed that the final decision remains entirely in AIK’s hands because the Unity Cup falls outside FIFA’s official international calendar.

“We have received the official invitation. Tomorrow we will go through it internally and then make a decision. We also have matches,” Takkula said.

“We will go through it internally tomorrow and get a complete picture of everything. Then, as you mention, we have every right to keep him here. It is not an official date and I think it is in our hands.”

The comments have raised fears that Nigeria could lose one of the most exciting names in Chelle’s experimental squad before the tournament even begins.

Further confusion emerged after Takkula later appeared to question whether any official communication had actually arrived from Nigeria.

“Actually, there has been no official communication about it whatsoever,” he told Fotbollskanalen.

“I heard a week or so ago that they were going to present their list. Since then I haven’t heard anything.”

The contradictory statements have intensified uncertainty surrounding Zadok’s availability just days before Nigeria’s opening Unity Cup fixture.

Complicating matters further is the player’s current fitness situation. Zadok is presently recovering from a hamstring injury suffered during AIK’s 4-2 defeat to Djurgården, an injury that also ruled him out of the club’s recent fixture against Västerås SK.

AIK are reportedly unwilling to take risks with one of their brightest young talents, especially amid growing transfer interest from clubs across Europe following his rapid rise in the Swedish top flight.

Because the Unity Cup is scheduled outside FIFA’s official international window, clubs are under no obligation to release players, a situation that explains why Chelle’s squad contains a heavy mix of NPFL stars, fringe internationals and players whose domestic seasons have already concluded.

Back in April, Chelle openly stated that the Unity Cup would serve as a testing ground for fresh faces before Nigeria’s high-profile friendlies against Poland and Portugal, where he intends to rely on his established senior internationals.

The Franco-Malian coach has spent recent months scouting extensively across Nigeria and Europe, attending NPFL matches in Ikenne, Ibadan, Lagos and Enugu while also monitoring eligible foreign-based players.

Among the headline debutants selected were former Arsenal academy goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, Millwall winger Femi Azeez, towering striker Rafiu Durosinmi and Irish-born forward Owen Oseni.

Nigeria will face Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final at The Valley on May 26, with either Jamaica or India awaiting in the final or third-place match.

But with no final confirmation yet from AIK, doubts continue to grow over whether one of Nigeria’s most exciting teenage prospects will get the opportunity to make his first appearance in Super Eagles colors.
