The road to the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season has taken another major step forward, with the league releasing the fixtures for the opening matchday.
The new campaign is scheduled to begin between 28 and 30 August 2026, with all 20 clubs set to begin their 38-match journey towards the NPFL title.
Among the standout opening-day fixtures, Rangers will welcome Katsina United, while Rivers United will host Plateau United.
The opening round also produces an intriguing meeting in Lagos, where Shooting Stars will face Inter Lagos, while Enyimba will begin their campaign away to Niger Tornadoes.
Elsewhere, Bendel Insurance will host Warri Wolves, Kwara United will welcome Kano Pillars, and Doma United will face Sporting Lagos.
The newly promoted sides will also be immediately tested, with Ikorodu City hosting Ranchers Bees, while Abia Warriors take on Kun Khalifat.
Rangers begin title defence at home.
For Rangers, the opening fixture against Katsina United will mark the beginning of another campaign following a memorable 2025/26 season in which the Enugu club secured a record-equalling ninth NPFL title.
The Flying Antelopes finished the previous campaign at the summit with 68 points, sealing the championship in Lagos on the final day. they will now begin their title defence at home, with Katsina United standing between them and a winning start to the new season.
Rivers United face Plateau United
Rivers United will begin their campaign at home against Plateau United.
The Port Harcourt side finished second in the 2025/26 NPFL season, making them one of the early contenders expected to challenge Rangers for the title.
The fixture will also launch another demanding season for Rivers United, who are balancing domestic ambitions with their return to continental competition.
Their previous campaign demonstrated their ability to compete at the top end of the NPFL, and the opening home fixture provides an opportunity to establish momentum immediately.

Enyimba will travel to face Niger Tornadoes in one of the opening weekend’s notable fixtures.
The Aba giants will be looking to begin the new campaign strongly after a season that did not deliver the title they had hoped for.
Niger Tornadoes, meanwhile, will have home advantage as they attempt to make a positive start against one of the league’s most decorated clubs.
There is also an interesting South-West meeting as Shooting Stars take on Inter Lagos.
The Ibadan side will hope to use their home advantage to make an early statement, while Inter Lagos face one of the established names in Nigerian football in their opening assignment.

The NPFL’s published calendar has the 2026/27 season concluding on 30 May 2027 after 38 matchdays, while the first half of the campaign is scheduled to conclude with Matchday 19 in December.
The festive break is set for 23 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, with Matchday 20 scheduled for 8 – 10 January.
