Godswill Akpabio United FC have officially unveiled Edward Green as the club’s new head coach after the highly regarded Nigerian tactician signed a two-year contract with the Nigeria National League (NNL) side in Uyo on Friday.
The appointment confirms an earlier exclusive report by The Athletic NG, which revealed that Green was set to become the club’s new manager. His unveiling marks the start of a new chapter for both coach and club ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Green replaces Lawrence Kingsley in the Godswill Akpabio United dugout and arrives after serving in assistant coaching roles at some of Nigeria’s leading clubs. He has previously worked with Akwa United, Sporting Lagos and Rivers United, building a reputation as one of the country’s most respected tactical coaches.
The appointment also represents a significant milestone in Green’s coaching career. Despite his growing reputation within Nigerian football, this is his first appointment as head coach of a professional football club.
Godswill Akpabio United have decided to place their faith in the tactician by handing him his first opportunity to lead a professional side. The club will hope his experience as an assistant coach at the highest level of Nigerian football can translate into success in the NNL.

Green began his coaching career with Ikot Ekpene United before enjoying a successful five-year spell at Akwa United, where he served as assistant manager and played a key role in the club’s technical crew during one of the most successful periods in its history.

He later continued his coaching career with Sporting Lagos before joining Rivers United, adding further top-flight experience to his resume. Across those roles, Green developed a reputation for his tactical knowledge and attention to detail.
He is also among the very few indigenous Nigerian coaches to hold a UEFA C coaching licence, underlining his commitment to coaching education and professional development.
Godswill Akpabio United will now look to Green to guide the club’s progress in the Nigeria National League. His arrival signals the club’s belief that his experience behind the scenes can be translated into success as a head coach.
With a two-year contract in place, Edward Green faces the challenge of making a successful transition from assistant coach to leading a professional club for the first time.
