Victor Osimhen has moved swiftly to quell speculation surrounding his absence from Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies after comments made by Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle sparked widespread debate.
The Nigeria striker issued a public statement after reports emerged suggesting he would miss the matches against Poland and Portugal in order to focus on resolving his club future amid ongoing transfer speculation.
Chelle had indicated after Nigeria’s Unity Cup triumph over Jamaica that Osimhen had been granted permission to remain away from international duty while discussions over his future continued.
The remarks quickly generated headlines, particularly as the Galatasaray forward remains one of the most sought after strikers in world football and continues to be linked with a permanent move away from Napoli.

However, Osimhen has now revealed that he spoke directly with Chelle and insisted the coach’s comments had been misunderstood.
“I just got off the phone with Coach Eric Chelle regarding the comments about me in his recent interview,” Osimhen said.
“Unfortunately, his words have been taken out of context and blown out of proportion. He has great respect for Galatasaray, follows most of our games, and never intended to create any controversy.”

The 27-year-old also reiterated his commitment to the national team and expressed his appreciation for the Franco-Malian coach.
“I appreciate the conversation, the opportunity to always represent my country, and I look forward to continuing to work with him.
“He is a great coach whom I respect a lot, and I kindly ask everyone to disregard the speculation surrounding this matter.
“Thank you for your consistent support.”
Osimhen’s statement is likely to ease concerns among supporters after questions emerged over the circumstances surrounding his absence from the forthcoming fixtures.

The striker has become one of the central figures in Chelle’s plans since the coach took charge of the Super Eagles and remains a key component of Nigeria’s long-term ambitions despite the disappointment of missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
