Hugo Broos believes South Africa should have walked away with all three points after Bafana Bafana’s 1-1 draw against Czechia, insisting his side produced one of their strongest performances of the tournament despite being held.
The South African coach cut a satisfied yet frustrated figure after the match, praising his players’ response while lamenting the lack of fortune that denied them victory.
“Why shouldn’t I be relieved?” Broos said afterwards. “I think we played a very good game today.”
The Belgian coach admitted his side were guilty of a costly lapse in concentration early in the contest, allowing Czechia to capitalise on a situation they had specifically prepared for.
“We knew that number five had a long throw-in, so we let ourselves be surprised on that level,” Broos explained. “You pay cash for such a mistake.”
Yet beyond that moment, the 74-year-old felt South Africa largely controlled proceedings, particularly after the break.
According to Broos, Bafana Bafana spent much of the second half pinned high in Czech territory, forcing their opponents into a more direct approach as they searched for a way back into the game.
“During the second half we were constantly on the half of Czechia,” he said. “The only thing Czechia did was play long balls to their tall players and try to create danger from that.”

The South African coach pointed to the physical mismatch his players had to contend with throughout the encounter. While Czechia relied heavily on aerial strength and direct football, Broos was encouraged by the way his team adapted and continued to create opportunities through movement and combination play.
For all their dominance, however, South Africa could not find the decisive goal.
Broos felt fortune was not on his side, with several promising efforts blocked before they could seriously trouble the Czech goalkeeper.
“We deserve more today because we played a very good game,” he said. “Sometimes you need a little bit of luck. That was not the case today. There was always a leg or a body blocking the shot.”
Despite the disappointment of not claiming victory, the coach believes the performance offered significant encouragement as South Africa continue their World Cup campaign.
Broos repeatedly praised the character shown by his players, highlighting their determination to fight back after falling behind and their willingness to take the game to a physically imposing opponent.
The draw leaves Bafana Bafana with work still to do in their quest to reach the knockout stages, but Broos sees plenty of reason for optimism.
“If we go on like that and if we can make another performance like today, I think we have a chance to go to the second round,” he said.
