‘South African Job for South Africans’: Pitso Mosimane officially applies for Bafana Bafana job, SAFA confirms

SAFA has confirmed that Pitso Mosimane is among more than 80 applicants for the Bafana Bafana head coach role, with the appointment process set to begin after South Africa's World Cup campaign.

South African football legend Pitso Mosimane has officially applied for the Bafana Bafana head coach position, with the South African Football Association (SAFA) confirming he is among more than 80 candidates seeking to succeed Hugo Broos.

SAFA Technical Committee chairman Jack Maluleke confirmed that Mosimane has submitted his application and will undergo the same recruitment process as every other candidate once South Africa’s FIFA World Cup campaign concludes.

“I can confirm that amongst the many top names of coaches who have applied for the Bafana Bafana job is indeed Pitso Mosimane. I have his CV with me,” Maluleke told Sunday World.

“We all know the passion of coach Pitso, his love for the country, and what his profile looks like, but he will also go through the interview process like everyone else because I have over 80 applications with me.”

The appointment process will only begin after Bafana Bafana return from the World Cup, with SAFA eager to have a new coach in place ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers scheduled for September.

“We will finalise the process when we return home after the World Cup because we need someone who will come in and get the job started for the upcoming Afcon qualifiers around September,” Maluleke added.

The confirmation comes after widespread speculation linked Mosimane with a return to North African football, particularly Egyptian champions Pyramids, although his decision to apply for the national team role now places him firmly among the favourites to replace Broos.

According to Africa’s most trusted journalist on African football matters, Pitso Mosimane is officially among the candidates being considered for the Bafana Bafana job.

The 61-year-old boasts one of the finest coaching résumés on the continent:

  • Three-time CAF Champions League winner
  • Two-time FIFA Club World Cup bronze medalist
  • CAF Coach of the Year

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s most decorated managers, Mosimane remains one of South African football’s greatest coaching icons.

Despite potentially succeeding Broos, Mosimane recently praised the Belgian for guiding South Africa into the World Cup knockout rounds.

“You know this game was a tactical masterclass [from Broos], while also showing humility and respect,” Mosimane said, as reported by FARPost.

“The coach is a human; he’s an experienced coach and responded well without being arrogant.”
