Nigeria’s Flying Eagles booked their place in the semi finals of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship despite suffering a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in their final Group B match on Sunday.
Abdu Maikaba’s side entered the encounter knowing qualification was within reach after impressive victories over Ghana and Togo, but they were second best against a disciplined Burkina Faso team that sealed top spot in the group.
The Young Stallions opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Alassana Bagayogo rose highest to head home from a corner, punishing Nigeria’s failure to deal with a set-piece.
Burkina Faso doubled their advantage 13 minutes later through a moment of individual brilliance. Mohamed Zongocurled a stunning freekick from around 30 yards beyond the reach of the Nigerian goalkeeper to leave the Flying Eagles with a mountain to climb before half-time.
Nigeria showed greater urgency after the interval and enjoyed more possession, but struggled to break down a well-organised Burkina Faso defence that limited them to few clear cut opportunities.
The defeat saw Burkina Faso finish top of Group B with seven points, while Nigeria advanced as runners-up on six points.
Earlier victories over Ghana (4-2) and Togo (3-0) ultimately proved enough to secure the Flying Eagles’ passage into the last four despite Sunday’s setback.
Elsewhere, Ghana and Togo played out a goalless draw, leaving the Black Satellites third with two points and Togo bottom with one.

The result sets up a blockbuster semi-final between Nigeria and tournament hosts Côte d’Ivoire, while Burkina Faso will face Niger for the other place in the final.
More importantly, the semi finals carry added significance beyond a place in the championship match.
The two finalists will qualify for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, making Nigeria’s clash with the hosts a high stakes encounter as the Flying Eagles seek to keep alive their hopes of returning to the continental finals.

Although the defeat exposed areas Maikaba’s side must improve particularly defending set pieces and creating chances against compact opponents, the Flying Eagles remain firmly in contention for qualification, with their fate still in their own hands.
