Nigeria’s Falconets have emerged as Africa’s last remaining representatives at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, booking their place in the Round of 16 after a dramatic turnaround in Group F.
Nigeria finished second in the group on four points, recovering from an opening defeat to Spain and a goalless draw against China before producing the biggest statement of their campaign with a 10-1 demolition of New Caledonia in their final group fixture.
That emphatic victory not only secured the Falconets’ progression but also ensured that Nigeria would carry the continent’s hopes into the knockout phase after every other African participant was eliminated.
Spain topped Group F with a perfect nine points, scoring 16 goals and conceding only once, while Nigeria’s four points were enough to take second place. China also progressed after finishing third with four points and joining the list of best third-placed teams.

The group stage produced a number of dominant performances, with Poland, Brazil, North Korea and Spain all completing the first phase with three victories from three matches.
Poland topped Group A with nine points and a +7 goal difference, while Argentina finished second on six points. Mexico and Benin were eliminated.
Brazil were similarly perfect in Group B, taking nine points from three games. England finished second on four points, with Canada also advancing as one of the best third-placed teams. Tanzania ended the group without a point.
France claimed Group C with seven points, ahead of South Korea on four. Ecuador and Ghana missed out on qualification.
Italy won Group D with seven points, followed by Japan on five, while the United States squeezed through as a best third-placed team with four points and an impressive +8 goal difference. New Zealand were eliminated without a point.
North Korea produced another flawless group-stage campaign in Group E, winning all three matches to finish on nine points. Portugal advanced in second place with four points, while Colombia also survived as one of the best third-placed teams.
Then came Group F, where Nigeria’s fortunes changed dramatically on the final matchday.

Nigeria’s campaign had begun with a 2-0 defeat to Spain, before the Falconets were held to a goalless draw by China.
With qualification still within reach, the final group fixture against New Caledonia became decisive and the response was emphatic.
Nigeria scored 10 goals to secure a 10-1 victory, taking their goal difference to +7 and lifting them into second place behind Spain.
The result transformed what had been an uncertain campaign into a knockoutstage qualification and gave Nigeria one of the tournament’s biggest scorelines in the group phase.
More importantly, it made the Falconets the only African team remaining in Poland.
The Round of 16 teams
The 16 teams advancing to the knockout stage are Poland, Argentina, Brazil, England, Canada, France, South Korea, Italy, Japan, the United States, North Korea, Portugal, Colombia, Spain, Nigeria and China.
The qualification picture also highlights the narrow margins involved in the best third place race. The United States, Canada, China and Colombia all advanced with four points, while Ecuador missed out despite collecting three points.
The mathematics of the group stage are now behind Nigeria, They will now face the next challenge with the distinction of being Africa’s sole representative at the tournament.
