NPFL introduces Friday night football as Shooting Stars host Ranchers Bees

The NPFL will introduce Friday night fixtures from October 16, with Shooting Stars hosting Ranchers Bees in the league’s latest move to modernise its matchday schedule.

The Nigeria Premier Football League is set to introduce Friday night football as part of a revised matchday schedule designed to give supporters more opportunities to watch topflight action.

The new arrangement will begin on Friday, October 16, when Shooting Stars host Ranchers Bees at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, with the Matchday Nine encounter scheduled for a 6pm kickoff.

The league will also introduce earlier kickoff times for selected Saturday and Sunday fixtures as the season progresses, creating a more varied schedule for supporters and clubs.

The changes are aimed at making NPFL matches more accessible to fans who may be unavailable for traditional weekend afternoon fixtures, while also creating additional opportunities for clubs and commercial partners to engage with supporters.

Shooting Stars meeting with Ranchers Bees will mark their second Friday home fixture of the season.

The Ibadan club previously hosted Inter Lagos on a Friday in the opening matchday and emerged with a 2-1 victory.

The move towards more evening fixtures represents another attempt by the NPFL to modernise its matchday presentation and broaden the appeal of domestic football.

Traditionally, the league has relied heavily on weekend afternoon kickoffs, but the revised schedule will introduce greater variety to the match calendar.

The league will be hoping the Friday night format can translate into stronger attendances and increased fan engagement when it officially gets underway on October 16.
