Rangers end Rivers United’s remarkable home run in NPFL summit clash

Rivers United remain top after Rangers fought back in Port Harcourt, but the 1-1 draw ended a remarkable home sequence for the league leaders in the NPFL today.

Rivers United’s attempt to strengthen their grip on the Euromatch-Nigeria Premier Football League summit suffered another setback on Sunday as defending champions Rangers International fought back to claim a 1-1 draw in Port Harcourt.

The result denied the Pride of Rivers an opportunity to respond emphatically to their first league defeat of the campaign, but its significance extended beyond the points shared between two title contenders.

The draw is a valuable response to their recent continental disappointment, while Rivers were left to reflect on a home record that had made them particularly difficult opponents in the league this season.

Chijioke Mbaoma had given the hosts an early advantage at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, but Godwin Obaje restored parity after the restart before his afternoon took another turn when he was sent off.

Despite finishing with 10 men, Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side held on to secure a point that keeps them firmly involved in the early title race.

Obaje’s intervention changes the contest

The encounter brought together the two leading sides in the standings, with Rivers United entering Matchday 11 at the summit and Rangers occupying second position.

Rivers made the brighter start and took the lead through Mbaoma in the 18th minute, giving the home supporters reason to believe their team could return to winning ways after last weekend’s disappointment against Bendel Insurance.

The hosts had suffered a 2-1 defeat in Benin City, bringing their nine-match unbeaten league start to an end. Technical manager Finidi George subsequently identified poor decision-making in possession and a collective defensive lapse as factors behind the loss.

However, Rangers returned from the interval with a response and found their equaliser through Obaje in the 54th minute.

The veteran forward’s intervention brought the visitors back into the contest, changing the complexion of a match that Rivers had initially appeared capable of controlling.

Obaje’s contribution was not without consequences, though, as Rangers were reduced to 10 men following his dismissal in the second half.

The Flying Antelopes were forced to negotiate the closing stages with a numerical disadvantage, but they maintained their resistance to leave Port Harcourt with a valuable point.

Rangers bring Rivers’ impressive home sequence to an end

Beyond the immediate title implications, the result carried considerable historical significance for the visitors.

Before Sunday’s encounter, Rivers United had won all 10 previous corresponding league meetings against Rangers in Port Harcourt since the club changed its name from Dolphins FC.

The last time the Enugu side secured a league victory in Port Harcourt during that sequence was in 2003, when they claimed a 1-0 win.

That remarkable run had given Rivers a significant historical advantage heading into the latest meeting, but Rangers finally interrupted it by avoiding defeat at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

The draw also ended another impressive aspect of Rivers’ campaign.

Before Sunday, the Pride of Rivers had not conceded a league goal at home this season, having established themselves as one of the division’s most difficult defensive sides.

Obaje’s equaliser therefore represented the first time an opponent had breached their home defence in the current league campaign.

Despite dropping two points at home, Rivers United remain top of the standings with 18 points from 11 matches.

Their record now stands at four victories, six draws and one defeat, with 15 goals scored and five conceded, giving them a goal difference of +10.

Rangers have also moved to 18 points but remain second with a goal difference of +5 after nine matches.

The champions therefore have two outstanding matches compared with Rivers, leaving them with an opportunity to strengthen their challenge for the summit when those fixtures are completed.

The outcome also highlights the competitive nature of the early title race, with Nasarawa United among the clubs still close to the leading pair.

Rangers, meanwhile, can take encouragement from their ability to recover from an early deficit and secure a result despite playing the closing stages with a numerical disadvantage.

The Flying Antelopes will next face Bendel Insurance on November 4, while Rivers United travel to face Sporting Lagos on November 7.
