The battle for control of the Euromatch-Nigeria Premier Football League continued to gather momentum over the weekend, but Matchday 11 delivered developments that could prove significant at both ends of the standings.
While the leading contenders struggled to separate themselves in a meeting of the division’s top two sides, other clubs took advantage of the opportunity to strengthen their positions. Further down the table, Enyimba found a much needed victory, while Inter Lagos were left facing fresh questions about their direction after another disappointing result.
The weekend’s most significant encounter came in Port Harcourt, where defending champions Rangers International interrupted Rivers United’s impressive home sequence to secure a 1–1 draw at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
Rangers halt Rivers’ remarkable home sequence
The meeting brought together the top two teams in the standings, with Rivers United hoping to consolidate their position at the summit after suffering their first league defeat of the campaign against Bendel Insurance the previous weekend.
Chijioke Mbaoma gave the hosts an early advantage, scoring in the 18th minute to put Rivers in front. However, Rangers returned from the break with a response, and Godwin Obaje restored parity in the 54th minute.
Obaje’s afternoon later took another turn when he was sent off in the second half, leaving the visitors to negotiate the closing stages with 10 men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side held on to claim a valuable point.
The result had significance beyond the title implications. Before the encounter, Rivers had won all 10 previous corresponding league meetings against Rangers in Port Harcourt since changing their name from Dolphins FC. The last time the Enugu side secured a league victory there during that sequence was in 2003, when they won 1–0.
The draw also brought an end to another impressive aspect of Rivers’ campaign. The Pride of Rivers had not conceded a home league goal this season before Obaje breached their defence.
Despite dropping two points, Rivers remain top with 18 points from 11 matches, having recorded four wins, six draws and one defeat. Rangers are second on the same points tally but have played only nine matches, leaving them with two games in hand.

Bendel continue to trouble the leading contenders
Rivers were not the only club to experience a difficult afternoon against an opponent determined to disrupt the established order.
Bendel Insurance followed their previous victory over Rivers with another important result, coming from behind to defeat Kwara United 2–1 in Ilorin.
Gideon Stephen gave the hosts the lead in the 49th minute, but Kayode Oke equalised for Bendel three minutes later. Chinedu Nwosu completed the turnaround in the 60th minute to give the visitors all three points.
The victory took Bendel to 18 points from 10 matches, moving them into third place and keeping them level with the leading pair.
Their six victories from 10 outings underline their strong start, although their position remains subject to the outstanding fixtures of the teams around them.
Kano Pillars also moved to 18 points after defeating Nasarawa United 2–0. Yahaya Ibrahim opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Fabian Nworie sealed the victory in the 64th minute.
Nasarawa, who began the round among the leading contenders, remain fifth with 17 points.
The outcome leaves four clubs on 18 points, although their different numbers of matches played mean the standings do not yet provide a complete picture of the title race.
Shooting Stars deliver the weekend’s biggest win
At the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, Shooting Stars produced the most emphatic victory of the round, defeating Abia Warriors 4–1.
Damilola Akinola opened the scoring in the fourth minute before Sodiq Ibrahim struck twice in the 41st and 45th minutes to give the Oluyole Warriors a commanding half time advantage.
Abia Warriors pulled one back in the 80th minute, but Issa Yusuf restored the three-goal cushion in the 88th minute to complete the victory.
The result lifted Shooting Stars to 15 points from 11 matches, keeping them in the top half of the standings.
For Abia Warriors, the defeat extended their difficult run and left them 18th with 10 points, increasing the pressure on the club to improve their results.
Enyimba find relief, but the danger remains
Enyimba also secured an important result, defeating Kun Khalifat 1–0 to collect their third league victory of the campaign.
Tobi Iyanda scored the decisive goal in the 15th minute, giving the Aba side a lead they managed to protect until the final whistle.
The victory offered some relief after a difficult start to the season, but it was not enough to move the former champions away from the lower end of the standings.
Enyimba remain 17th with 11 points from 11 matches, leaving them close to the relegation positions and in need of greater consistency.
Kun Khalifat, meanwhile, occupy 16th place with 12 points after suffering their sixth defeat.
Late drama in Gombe as Doma and Ikorodu share four goals
Doma United and Ikorodu City produced one of the most dramatic finishes of the round, playing out a 2–2 draw at the Pantami Stadium on Saturday.
Bitrus Philemon opened the scoring for Doma from the penalty spot in the 19th minute, but Tomiwa Awojobi restored parity for Ikorodu five minutes later.
The visitors appeared to have taken control when Ujunwa Elijah scored in the 85th minute to put Ikorodu ahead.
However, Philemon had the final say, scoring deep into stoppage time to rescue a point for the hosts and complete his brace.
The draw left Doma on 15 points from 10 matches, while Ikorodu have 14 points from 11 outings.
Elsewhere, Plateau United and Warri Wolves also shared the points after a 1–1 draw in Jos.
Emmanuel Aribogha put Warri Wolves ahead in the 24th minute, but Samuel Ayanrinde equalised for Plateau United in the 60th minute.
Both sides remain in the middle of the table, with Plateau on 16 points and Warri Wolves on 13.
Inter Lagos’ struggles deepen after another dropped lead
At the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Inter Lagos missed another opportunity to improve their position after drawing 1–1 with fellow promoted side Ranchers Bees.
The hosts took the lead in the ninth minute through a penalty converted by Qoyum Akinpelu, but Oscar Gabriel equalised for Ranchers in the 60th minute.
The result left Inter at the foot of the 20-team standings, while Ranchers remained 19th with nine points from 10 matches.
Inter’s situation has become increasingly difficult. The club’s struggles have been compounded by a points deduction imposed by the NPFL following a disciplinary breach in an earlier fixture against Katsina United.
Head coach Olusanjo Olutayo, who took charge on an interim basis following Shakiru Giwa’s departure in October, was visibly frustrated after the draw.
The manager questioned the mentality and tactical understanding of some of his players, warning that he intended to remove those he considered unable to meet his expectations.
“If I have cowards in my team, which I am clearly not, if I have cowards in my team, well, we’re going to keep on having this issue. But don’t worry, we’ll weed them out,” Olutayo said.
He also criticised what he viewed as a lack of tactical understanding among some members of his squad.
“Weed out the cowards in the team, weed the soft players in the team, weed out the players who cannot recollect information at a high level in the team,” he added.
Olutayo insisted that his players had received clear instructions through video analysis and separate tactical sessions for the midfield, attack and defence.
The comments have attracted criticism from supporters who questioned the decision to publicly dress down professional players. However, the coach maintained that his expectations would not be lowered to accommodate what he considered shortcomings in the squad.
Inter’s predicament is particularly concerning given that the club’s record stands at one victory, four draws and six defeats from 11 matches before accounting for the points deduction.
Ranchers Bees, meanwhile, have a game in hand and will also be looking to move away from the bottom end of the standings.
Katsina claim victory as Niger Tornadoes and Barau settle for a draw
Katsina United strengthened their position with a 2–1 victory over Sporting Lagos.
Luis Dadong scored twice in the first half, finding the net in the 10th and 28th minutes to put the hosts in control. Aliyu Baba reduced the deficit for Sporting Lagos in the 65th minute, but Katsina held on for all three points.
The result took Katsina to 16 points from 11 matches, while Sporting Lagos remain on 15 points from 10 outings.
In the other fixture, Niger Tornadoes and Barau played out a goalless draw on Friday, with neither side able to find a breakthrough.
Barau’s seventh draw of the campaign leaves them on 16 points, while Niger Tornadoes also have 16 points after 11 matches.
