FG’s message after Samson Adamu’s CAF appointment points to something bigger

The Federal Government has welcomed Samson Adamu’s elevation to one of African football’s most influential administrative positions, describing his confirmation as a recognition of the experience he has built within the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Through the National Sports Commission (NSC), the government also sees the appointment as an opportunity to encourage more Nigerians to pursue leadership roles in international sports administration.

NSC chairman Shehu Dikko congratulated Adamu following his confirmation as CAF’s substantive General Secretary on October 30, but his message extended beyond the significance of having a Nigerian occupy the position.

“Samson’s confirmation recognises the experience he has built within CAF. We congratulate him and wish him every success,” Dikko said.

The appointment marks a historic milestone for Nigeria, with Adamu becoming the first Nigerian to hold the substantive General Secretary position in CAF’s history.

However, the government’s reaction has also drawn attention to what the development could mean for the country’s wider relationship with the continental governing body.

FG sees an opportunity for Nigerian sports administration

Dikko described Adamu’s progression through CAF’s administrative structure as evidence of the ability of Nigerian sports administrators to contribute to leadership at continental and international levels.

Before his confirmation, Adamu had served as CAF Director of Competitions, Director of Tournaments and Events, and Acting General Secretary following the departure of Véron Mosengo-Omba in March.

His journey through those positions, according to the NSC chairman, should encourage greater Nigerian participation in international sports administration.

Dikko said such representation could strengthen Nigeria’s sports diplomacy and relationships across the continent.

He also urged young Nigerians seeking careers in sports administration to draw inspiration from Adamu’s experience.

“For young sports administrators, his progress shows what experience, competence and integrity can make possible,” he added.

The government’s message, however, comes at a time when Nigeria is preparing to host two major CAF events, offering another dimension to the relationship between the country and the continental body.

Abuja and Lagos prepare for major CAF events

Nigeria is scheduled to host the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly in Abuja on November 21, 2026, before welcoming the continental football community again for the CAF Awards in Lagos on December 10.

Dikko highlighted the two events as evidence of the Federal Government’s commitment to sustained cooperation with CAF.

Beyond their football significance, he said they could create opportunities for Nigerian businesses operating in hospitality, tourism, transport and media.

“The Federal Government remains committed to working with CAF to advance football and develop its commercial value,” he said.

The events will bring football administrators and other stakeholders from across Africa to Nigeria, providing an opportunity for the country to showcase its capacity to host major continental gatherings.

The NSC chairman’s remarks therefore connect Adamu’s appointment with a broader ambition to strengthen Nigeria’s engagement with CAF, while also identifying potential economic benefits from hosting its activities.

Adamu’s confirmation has attracted attention because of the position he now occupies within African football administration.

As General Secretary, he will oversee CAF’s administrative machinery and work with its governing structures and 54 member associations.

The NSC reaffirmed its readiness to work with CAF, the Nigeria Football Federation and other stakeholders to strengthen football administration and expand the sport’s economic opportunities.
