Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has warned Victor Boniface against repeating his frustrated tunnel walkout after the Nigerian striker was overlooked for a late substitution in Saturday’s dramatic 4-3 Bundesliga victory over Mainz.
Boniface, who has struggled for regular playing time this season, headed down the tunnel after coach Carles Martínez made his final substitutions in the 84th minute, introducing Equi Fernández and Jonas Hofmann instead of the Super Eagles forward.
The incident came after Boniface had been overlooked on three occasions during the match’s substitution windows, leaving him visibly frustrated as his hopes of featuring remained unfulfilled.
Rolfes addressed the situation after the game, making it clear that the striker’s reaction would not be accepted in future.
“Perhaps he went into the dressing room a little too early today. It won’t happen next time,” the sporting director said.
Although Rolfes initially made light of the incident, his comments amounted to a clear warning to the 25-year-old, whose immediate priority is to work his way back into contention for regular minutes.
Boniface faces uncertain season
The forward’s frustration comes amid a difficult spell at Leverkusen, where opportunities have been limited.
According to the report, Boniface has made just one Bundesliga appearance this season, providing an assist during a five minutes cameo against SV Elversberg on the opening day before spending subsequent matches sidelined or among the substitutes.

Martínez said he had not noticed the tunnel walkout during the game but confirmed that the matter would be addressed internally.
“I didn’t notice it during the game. I don’t know anything about it. If that’s what happened, we’ll speak to him,” Martínez told Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger.
The coach acknowledged that players naturally want to contribute but stressed that they must also accept decisions made by the technical staff.
“I can understand that every player wants to help the team, at the same time, decisions like that are part of football,” he added.
