Fenerbahce move to block Osimhen from the Intercontinental derby

Fenerbahçe are preparing a formal appeal to the Turkish FA to stop Victor Osimhen from playing in the derby against Galatasaray, citing safety concerns over his protective hand cast.

Turkish Super Lig title contenders Fenerbahce are preparing a formal appeal to the Turkish Football Federation in a bid to prevent Victor Osimhen from featuring in Sunday’s crucial derby against Galatasaray at RAMS Park.

The controversy centres on Osimhen’s protective hand gear following his recent return from a forearm injury.

The Nigerian striker was seen wearing a cast on his right hand during Galatasaray’s 2-0 Turkish Cup defeat to Genclerbirligi, prompting concerns from their fierce rivals.

Fenerbahçe are reportedly set to argue that the equipment commonly described as a POP (plaster of Paris) cast could pose a danger to other players during physical duels.

According to Turkish journalist Esra Köse of HT Spor, the club believes it has a strong case and is already preparing medical documentation.

“There is a belief that the hard protective equipment Victor Osimhen uses in matches poses a risk to opposing players,” Köse said.

“Fenerbahçe is preparing to officially apply to the TFF… The club’s medical team is preparing a report on materials that can be used according to IFAB rules.”

The appeal will reportedly reference regulations set by the International Football Association Board, which govern the use of protective equipment in matches.

Any ruling that restricts Osimhen’s participation is expected to be strongly contested by Galatasaray, setting the stage for a tense pre-match battle off the pitch as well as on it.

The derby, one of the fiercest rivalries in world football, could now be overshadowed by administrative and medical debates just days before kickoff.

Despite missing a significant portion of the season through injury, Osimhen remains central to Galatasaray’s title push.

He has scored 19 goals and registered seven assists in 39 appearances across all competitions form that underlines his importance as the club chase back-to-back league titles.

The final decision from the Turkish FA could have a decisive impact on one of the season’s defining matches.
