Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi and defender Calvin Bassey have offered a candid assessment of Nigeria’s 2-2 draw with Poland, a match defined by dominance, missed control in key moments, and a late equaliser that denied Eric Chelle’s side victory in Warsaw.

Nigeria twice led in a lively international friendly at the Stadion Narodowy, where goals from Terem Moffi and Paul Onuachu looked set to secure another statement result for a Super Eagles side still unbeaten in regulation time under Chelle. However, Przemyslaw Wisniewski’s stoppage time strike ensured the contest ended all square.

The result followed a familiar pattern from the night: Nigeria’s strong spells, VAR interventions, and late drama at both ends of the pitch.

Moffi’s opener came after a well-worked move involving Ndidi and Moses Simon, with the finish initially ruled out before VAR confirmed the goal. Poland responded just before half-time through Kacper Potulski after a defensive lapse from a corner, bringing the hosts level in a game that had largely been controlled by Nigeria.

After the break, Chelle made several changes as he continued to assess squad depth, introducing fresh legs including Calvin Bassey. Nigeria regained the lead in the second half after VAR awarded a penalty for handball, which Onuachu calmly converted.

Yet despite moments of control and key saves from Maduka Okoye, Nigeria were unable to close out the game. Wisniewski’s long-range effort deep into stoppage time ultimately rescued a draw for Poland.

Speaking after the match, Ndidi admitted Nigeria had been the better side for large spells but acknowledged a shift in approach after the break.

“We dominated the game. First half was an amazing game and second half we tried to sit back a bit, to defend a bit and then press,” Ndidi said. “It was a good game, a brilliant one. We always try as much as possible to get a win in every game.”

His comments reflected a broader sense within the squad that Nigeria’s control of proceedings faded at key moments, particularly after taking the lead.

Calvin Bassey, who featured after half-time, echoed that sentiment, stressing that Nigeria should have managed the game more effectively.

“We should have got the win. Two late goals in both halves. It shows there was something we could adjust,” Bassey said.

While disappointed with the outcome, the Fulham defender also pointed to positives, including the integration of new players and the limited preparation time within the camp.

“A lot of us had different arrival times. A few of us joined camp yesterday, so it is good to get some minutes in the legs,” he explained.

Bassey also highlighted the squad’s depth and competitive spirit despite the draw.

“It shows the quality we have in this Nigerian squad. We have an abundance of talent and it is just positive,” he added.

The draw extends Chelle’s strong run in charge, with Nigeria continuing to show attacking cohesion and tactical flexibility even as defensive lapses in crucial moments remain an area of concern.

Against Poland, Nigeria demonstrated both sides of their current evolution: a confident, structured attacking unit capable of creating chances against top opposition, and a team still learning how to manage matches to completion.
