Two Man of the Match awards? How Semi Ajayi earned two Man of the Match awards despite Hull’s draw

Semi Ajayi earned rare recognition after Hull City’s draw with Brentford, but the numbers behind his performance explain why he stood out. Here’s the case today

Semi Ajayi has added another significant achievement to his Hull City campaign, earning recognition for a performance that stood out even as the Tigers were left frustrated at the MKM Stadium.

The Nigerian defender completed the full 90 minutes against Brentford on Sunday, helping Hull remain unbeaten at home in the Premier League this season. Yet the afternoon ended without the victory the hosts wanted, extending their winless run in all competitions.

The result was a reminder of Hull’s difficulty in turning competitive performances into three points. For Ajayi, however, the individual assessment told a different story.

Ajayi was named both the Premier League and Hull City Player of the Match after the 1-1 draw, collecting two awards from the same fixture.

His Flashscore rating of 7.6 provides another measure of his contribution. While he did not register a shot, the centreback made his influence felt through his defensive work, recording five successful tackles from six attempts, six duels won from nine, two interceptions, four clearances and five recoveries.

He also produced a last-man tackle, a key defensive intervention that helped underline his contribution to Hull’s efforts to contain Brentford.

Ajayi completed 17 of his 21 passes, an accuracy rate of 81 per cent, and was successful with both of his passes into the final third. He also recorded three progressive carries, showing his willingness to move the ball forward when opportunities arose.

Those figures help explain why his performance attracted recognition despite the home side dropping points. His contribution extended beyond simply defending the penalty area; he was involved in winning possession, stopping attacks and helping Hull progress the ball.

The latest awards add to a season in which Ajayi has already enjoyed a memorable moment on the Premier League stage.

In August, he scored Hull’s opening goal in their 2-0 victory over Manchester United as the Tigers celebrated their return to the topflight after nine years away.

Ajayi reacted quickest in the 17th minute after goalkeeper Senne Lammens pushed Oliver McBurnie’s effort onto the post following a corner. Nobel Mendy later headed in the second goal to complete a famous afternoon for Hull.

Ajayi subsequently won the Man of the Match award after receiving 38.9 per cent of the vote, finishing ahead of Mendy, who collected 31.4 per cent. He also recorded five clearances, three recoveries and two interceptions in that match.

Against Brentford, his contribution was again recognized, this time with two awards from a single game. The latest distinction reinforces his growing importance to Hull, even as the team continues to search for consistency.

Hull had reason to believe they could end their winless run when McBurnie converted a penalty in the 24th minute.

The opportunity came after a poor pass from Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was intercepted by Tim Iroegbunam, with Aaron Hickey penalized in the resulting sequence. McBurnie sent the spotkick into the bottom corner to give the hosts the lead.

Brentford responded after the interval and equalized three minutes after the hour mark. Ryan Giles failed to clear a cross, and the ball fell to Igor Thiago before Dango Ouattara finished from close range.

Hull pushed for a second goal, with Mohamed Belloumi striking the side-netting after working past defenders. Jaidon Anthony also fired narrowly wide, while Mohamed-Ali Cho forced Kelleher into a save.

Brentford had opportunities of their own late in the contest, but neither side found a winner. Both teams had to settle for a point in their firstever topflight meeting.

The draw extended Hull’s winless run to seven matches in all competitions, with four draws and three defeats. Their unbeaten home record in the Premier League remains intact, but the sequence illustrates the challenge facing the team as it seeks to turn draws into victories.

Brentford’s own league form has been inconsistent, with just one win in their previous seven league matches, alongside five draws and one defeat.

The double award is a personal reward for a disciplined defensive display. His 7.6 rating, five successful tackles and five recoveries help explain why he stood out in a game that ultimately offered Hull less than they wanted.
