Fidelis Ilechukwu has revealed that the support of Rangers, the Enugu State Government and the club’s supporters played a decisive role in his decision to remain in Enugu after signing a new contract extension.
The ranger’s technical adviser just committed his future to the Nigeria Premier Football League champions, ending speculation that he could leave the Flying Antelopes following another successful campaign.
Rumours about Ilechukwu’s future intensified while he was away on national team duty with the Super Eagles, but the coach says the backing he has received convinced him that there was still more work to be done at Rangers.
“Rangers is a team I love so much,” Ilechukwu said during his contract-extension press conference.
“When you find out that people are with you and you are with the people and you get the support from the media, I think you do what you can do to make sure you get the job done.”
The 47-year-old reserved special praise for Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, pointing out the administration’s commitment to the club both financially and otherwise.
“I want to thank His Excellency for what he has done so far. The love he shows, the support, financial and otherwise, I’m so happy,” he added.
With his future now settled, attention has quickly shifted to Rangers’ plans for next season, particularly as the club prepares for both domestic and continental challenges.

Ilechukwu revealed that Rangers are already working aggressively in the transfer market and believe significant additions are required to strengthen the squad.
According to the coach, the club could recruit as many as 10 new players before the start of the new campaign.
“At least we need 10 good players,” he said.
“Ten good players that are better than those we have on ground and who can play in continental football also.”
The Rangers boss identified midfield and attacking areas as key priorities as he seeks to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.
Time, however, is of the essence. with CAF registration deadlines approaching and competition for top talent intensifying, Ilechukwu stressed the importance of moving quickly in the market.
“If you don’t do fast, good players may leave,” he warned.
The former MFM and Plateau United coach disclosed that Rangers are already accelerating recruitment efforts and hopes several deals can be completed in the coming days.
Beyond the domestic market, Rangers are also considering foreign reinforcements as part of their strategy to improve squad quality.
Ilechukwu specifically mentioned Ghana and Ivory Coast as possible recruitment destinations, indicating that the club’s scouting network could extend beyond Nigeria in search of players capable of raising standards.
“Maybe look at Ghana or Ivory Coast to bring one or two players,” he said.
