Deborah Abiodun says the Super Falcons have no intention of resting on past achievements as Nigeria prepare to defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations crown in Morocco.
The reigning African champions head into WAFCON 2026 as favourites to lift the trophy once again, with Justine Madugu’s side seeking a record extending 11th continental title and another reminder of their enduring dominance in African women’s football.
Despite Nigeria’s unmatched success in the competition, Abiodun insists the squad’s desire for silverware remains undiminished.
“The last title was great, but that’s in the past now. We have to focus on this one,” Abiodun told ESPN.
“It would be great to win again because, as a player, you never get tired of winning.”
The Super Falcons have been drawn in Group C alongside Malawi, Zambia and Egypt, a section many expect them to navigate successfully.
But Abiodun believes reputations will count for little once the tournament begins, stressing that Nigeria will treat every opponent with equal respect as they begin their title defence.
“Regardless of whether it’s Malawi, Zambia or Egypt, every game is important,” she said.
“We’re not taking any team lightly, and I’m not underrating any player.”

The midfielder also underlined the responsibility that comes with wearing Nigeria’s colours, saying the team’s primary motivation is to make the country proud whenever they step onto the pitch.
“As the Super Falcons, we’re always trying to make Nigerians proud. That’s our first priority making Nigerians proud, making our teammates proud and making ourselves proud.”
With qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup also on the line, Abiodun acknowledged the significance of the tournament and expects every match to demand the very best from the defending champions.
“This WAFCON is very important, especially because there’s World Cup qualification at stake. I don’t think we’re taking any game lightly. It’s going to be fun.”
