Nigerian midfielder Christantus Uche has received his second red card in the last weekend, resulting in a three-match ban. Uche saw red after Getafe’s 1-0 loss to Espanyol last weekend, after he mistakenly stamped on the shin of an Espanyol player. He was first shown a yellow card, but after a VAR review, the referee changed it to a red card.

The situation escalated when Uche approached the referee in an aggressive manner and refused to leave the pitch. Eventually, he had to be escorted off the field by his teammates and some staff from Getafe.

Based on a new report from Eldesmarque, Uche has been handed a three-match ban by LaLiga.

In his report, referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea stated that Uche was sent off “for coming in with his foot in a plank shape, hitting an opponent’s shin, using excessive force in the fight for the ball.” Then, he added that “once sent off, he (Uche) had to be restrained and subsequently removed from the field of play by several players and coaching staff from his team as he was approaching me angrily, protesting my decision.”

One of the matches has already been served, as he was not listed for the game against Real Madrid. So, Uche now has two games left.

Hence, he will miss the games against Rayo Vallecano and Valencia. Christantus Uche is considered one of the bright young stars in football and has attracted interest from top Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and West Ham.

However, his increasing tendency to receive red cards could hinder his career progression. Moreover, his behaviour after the incident was nothing short of appalling. If Uche wants to establish himself as one of the top midfielders in the game, he needs to learn to control his temper.

Uche is yet to get a call-up to the Super Eagles, but if he does not get better, he may never get it.

A red card naturally translates to a one-match ban. But it could still be extended to three, depending on the circumstances before or after the incident.
