Nigeria legend Mutiu Adepoju has dismissed calls for a complete overhaul of the Flying Eagles squad following their disappointing semi-final exit at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)
The Flying Eagles had emerged as strong contenders to secure a record-extending eighth title after overcoming defending champions Senegal in the quarter-finals.
However, their campaign came to an end with a narrow 1-0 loss to South Africa in the last four—a match in which Aliyu Zubairu’s side squandered numerous chances.
The recent setback has led to suggestions in some quarters that the squad, largely made up of home-based players, requires a total revamp.

Proponents of change argue that incorporating more foreign-based Nigerian talent would strengthen the team.
But Adepoju, a stalwart of Nigerian football history, disagrees with the notion of sweeping changes.
“If they (the Flying Eagles) have participated and performed very well, why change the team? If there’s any addition that will improve what they have, then fine,” Adepoju told the Telegraph.
“But changing the team entirely with players who haven’t even been tested in the qualifiers—that isn’t beneficial. I don’t think it’s right. If there’s a slight addition to balance or enhance the squad ahead of the World Cup, then yes. But replacing the team completely with different players? I don’t believe that will work.

“The players who competed in AFCON have been with the coach, they understand each other, and they performed well enough to qualify for the World Cup—so why change them?
“As I said, there’s no need for a total overhaul. Bring in a few players who can add value, and we’ll be fine. It shouldn’t be about picking someone just because they play in Europe.”
Adepoju advocates for continuity and balance ahead of the FIFA U20 World Cup, urging selectors not to underestimate the existing cohesion and experience within the squad.
