Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been named Nottingham Forest’s PFA Community Champion for the 2024/25 season, recognising his exceptional contributions off the pitch despite enduring a difficult campaign on it.
The 26-year-old Nigerian forward faced a turbulent season at the City Ground, struggling with injuries and playing a secondary role to teammate Chris Wood. Awoniyi managed just one goal in 26 appearances, a far cry from his usual impact.
His season took a frightening turn last week when he was placed in an induced coma following emergency surgery for a ruptured intestine—an injury sustained under controversial circumstances during Forest’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City. Fortunately, the operation was successful, and Awoniyi is now recovering well.

Despite his struggles on the field, Awoniyi remained a beacon of positivity in the community. In March, he organised a special meal for the people of Nottingham, serving as an Iftar for Muslims observing Ramadan and a meal break for Christians participating in Lent.
The gesture highlighted his commitment to inclusivity and solidarity, bringing different communities together through shared moments of generosity.
Additionally, Awoniyi consistently showed appreciation for Nottingham Forest supporters, applauding them after matches and engaging with fans on social media. His humility and connection with the fanbase did not go unnoticed, earning him admiration beyond his footballing contributions.

The award serves as a testament to Awoniyi’s character, proving that his influence extends far beyond the pitch. As he recovers from his recent health scare, the recognition is a heartwarming reminder of the positive impact athletes can have off the field—even in their most challenging moments.
