From Player to Coach to Champion: Aliyu Zubairu reveals why he left El-Kanemi Warriors

Flying Eagles coach Aliyu Zubairu has left El-Kanemi Warriors after two successful seasons, including a historic Federation Cup win.

Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu has officially left his role at El-Kanemi Warriors, ending a two-year tenure that saw him guide the club to Federation Cup glory and maintain their top-flight status.

In a heartfelt farewell message shared after the 2025 football season, Zubairu expressed deep gratitude to the management, players, and supporters of the Borno-based club.

“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the management, staff, players, and fans for their unwavering support over the past two years. My time with the club has been filled with incredible memories and milestones that have further cemented the team’s reputation in Nigerian football history,” Zubairu said.

Zubairu revealed that he decided not to renew his contract, which expired at the end of the season, believing that he had fulfilled his mission at the club.

“From representing this club as a player to coaching it to the elite league, winning the President’s Federation Cup, and sustaining our status in the NPFL, it’s been a true honour,” he added.

The former El-Kanemi player also extended his appreciation to the leadership of Borno State, including Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the Commissioner for Sports, Honourable Saina Buba, and Borno FA Chairman, Alhaji Babagana Kalli, for their continuous support.

“While I’m leaving this club, I don’t see this exit as an end to our relationship but as a new chapter in my journey. Borno will always remain a home to me and dear to my heart.”

Zubairu’s next managerial destination is yet to be confirmed, but he is expected to remain active at the top level of Nigerian football following his successful spell with the Warriors.

The Former Gombe United and Wikki Tourist gaffer was on the sidelines for El Kanemi for 36 matches 9 wins 13 draws, and 10 losses, he accumulated 40 points in the 2024/025 season.
