Why Brighton bet on Africa’s best goalkeeper to anchor new season

Chiamaka Nnadozie

Brighton & Hove Albion Women have confirmed the signing of Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie, widely regarded as Africa’s finest goalkeeper, as they strengthen their squad for the 2025/26 Women’s Super League campaign.

The 24-year-old joins the Seagulls on a free transfer after her contract with French side Paris FC expired.

Nnadozie will officially link up with her new teammates on 1 July, bringing elite-level experience, composure under pressure, and a reputation as one of the best shot-stoppers in world football.

“We’re confident she’ll bring leadership, hunger, and quality,” Brighton manager Dario Vidosic said. “She’s joining a squad full of ambition, and her presence will help us push to a new level.”

Chiamaka Nnadozie put in a world-class performance as Nigeria’s Super Falcons earned a draw against Portugal in a spirited WAFCON warm-up.

She saved two penalties against Paris Saint-Germain and was instrumental in their deep runs in European competition, racking up 16 UEFA Women’s Champions League appearances.

In 2024, she became the first African goalkeeper to be named UNFP Division 1 Féminine Goalkeeper of the Season, while also winning the D1 Arkema Best Goalkeeper award—firmly placing her among the world’s best.

Internationally, Nnadozie is the cornerstone of Nigeria’s Super Falcons, with 55 caps since debuting at 17 against France in 2018.

A product of Rivers Angels, Nnadozie lifted the Nigeria Women’s Premier League title in 2019 and won three national cups before her move to Europe.

Vidosic praised her big-match mentality and calm authority: “She’s a commanding figure in the box—her ability to organise the defence, handle pressure, and win games is exactly what we need as we look to compete at the top end of the table.”
