Daniel Igali: Construction booms at Bayelsa State ₦95bn stadium site in Igbogene

Bayelsa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Honourable Daniel Igali, has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to delivering Nigeria’s most modern stadium as work intensifies on the ₦95 billion stadium in Igbogene.

The 25,000-capacity stadium designed to be upgradable and multipurpose is being touted as Nigeria’s most modern sports facility, and it’s already taking shape with round-the-clock efforts.

Bayelsa State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Honourable Daniel Igali, provided a major update today, revealing that backfilling is in full swing, while piling zones are fully prepared as ground stabilization continues.

“Piling rigs, rebars, and other heavy machinery are already on site,” Igali stated in a post on social media.

“Temporary staff accommodation is almost completed, and we’re preparing for 24/7 work mode.”

The ambitious project is being handled by MCC Nigeria Ltd, and the speed of progress has been described as “electric” by state officials.

This is not the first time Igali has spoken about Bayelsa’s stadium ambitions.

In an earlier exclusive interview with Athletic NG during the 22nd National Sports Festival (Gateway Games 2024) held in Ogun State in May 2025, Igali detailed the state’s long-term vision.

“We are building the most modern stadium in Nigeria at the cost of ₦95 billion, which will be completed in 20 months,” said the Olympic gold medallist-turned-administrator.

He added, “We intend to host the 2028 National Sports Festival. That shows you a state that is intentional, focused, prepared, and ready to take over sports in Nigeria.”

Once completed, the stadium is expected to attract major national and continental events, placing Bayelsa on the map as a serious sports destination.

It is expected to host not only football and athletics events, but also serve as a centrepiece for concerts, cultural festivals, and other mass gatherings.

Bayelsa’s sports sector has seen a surge of investment under Governor Douye Diri’s administration, with improved grassroots programmes, elite athlete support, and growing club representation across domestic competitions.
