‘I sink with him’: Ogunmodede defends Chelle before CHAN farewell

Super Eagles assistant coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, says he will not join calls to criticise head coach Eric Chelle despite the team’s disastrous showing at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Speaking to journalist Osasu Obayiuwana in Dar es Salaam on Friday morning, Ogunmodede said:

“Many people are expecting me to say negative things about my head coach, because I am no longer in charge of the team and we are not doing well. I will never do that.”

Ogunmodede led Remo Stars to a historic first ever league title last season and  became the first Southwest club to win the league in 25 years.

The Ikenne-based outfit amassed 71 points from 38 games, winning 22, drawing 5, and losing 11.

“I am his assistant and I accepted to do this job. I stand with him and I sink with him. That is what loyalty and professionalism is about,” Ogunmodede told Osasu in Tanzania.

The Nigerian duo masterminded a 3-1 victory over Ghana’s Black Galaxies in Uyo, following a goalless first leg, to secure qualification for CHAN 2025. No

However, under Chelle’s management at the finals in Tanzania, the Super Eagles B have endured a torrid run losing 1-0 to Senegal in their opening match before a 4-0 defeat to Sudan in Zanzibar.
