32-cap WAFCON-winning Super Falcons striker retires from football

Super Falcons striker Ifeoma Onumonu has announced her retirement from football, bringing to an end a career that spanned more than two decades.

The American-born forward, who represented the United States at under-23 level before switching allegiance to Nigeria in 2021, earned 32 caps for the Super Falcons, scoring five goals.

She was part of Nigeria’s squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she was promoted from the alternates list after Halimatu Ayinde withdrew through injury.

Onumonu also helped Nigeria clinch a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) crown in Morocco in 2022.

At club level, she played for Montpellier in France and several teams in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), including Utah Royals, NJ/NY Gotham FC, Reign FC, Portland Thorns and Boston Breakers, following a successful college career with the California Golden Bears.

In her farewell message on Instagram, Onumonu reflected on a journey that began when she was just eight years old.

“I remember how vast I thought the field was,” she wrote. “All I wanted to do was run as fast as I could and score. I didn’t much care about winning or losing; I just loved playing.”

Looking back on her career, she described it as “an incredible journey,” adding:

“I had the profound pleasure of lifting an NWSL championship trophy, representing Nigeria at the Olympics and a World Cup, and helping to lift the African Cup of Nations trophy with the Super Falcons for a historic 10th time.”

The 30-year-old stressed that her decision was not a farewell to the game itself, but a transition to new opportunities.

“This is not a goodbye to football, but a new beginning,” she said. “I am excited to explore opportunities off the pitch, using the skills and lessons learned from my time on it.”
