Former Akwa United midfielder Afeez Aremu says his move to Aberdeen represents the next step in his career after the Scottish club completed the signing of the Nigeria international from German side Kaiserslautern.
The 26-year-old defensive midfielder has agreed a deal that will keep him at Pittodrie until 2028, becoming Aberdeen’s fifth signing of the winter transfer window.
Aremu brings extensive European experience, having previously played for IK Start in Norway and Bundesliga side St Pauli before his spell with Kaiserslautern in Germany.

Despite Aberdeen currently being without a permanent manager, the midfielder said the challenge of joining the Dons was a key factor behind his decision.
“I’m excited to be here. I’ve been made to feel really welcome, and I can’t wait to get started,” Aremu told Aberdeen’s website.
“I like new challenges and I think Aberdeen offers that. For me, I am growing and taking the next step in my career so it’s a huge move.”

Aremu also highlighted his desire to contribute immediately as Aberdeen push for a strong finish to the season.
“I’m an aggressive player but I have other attributes to my game. There is a lot to play for this season and I want to strengthen the team to help them achieve good things.”
Aberdeen sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel believes the former Akwa United man will add much-needed physicality and tactical awareness to the squad.

“Afeez is going to bring a real physical edge to the squad, something which I think we have been looking for,” Pfannenstiel said.
“He’s strong, robust and comes with good experience in a competitive environment in Germany.

“He also is tactically aware so combined with all his athletic attributes we believe he can adapt well to the intensity of the Scottish game and make a real impact.”
