Nathan Tella delivered an influential performance as Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to beat VfL Wolfsburg 6-3 in a dramatic Bundesliga encounter.
Making his first start after returning from injury, the Nigerian forward played a key role in a high-scoring contest that keeps Leverkusen’s hopes of European qualification alive.
Despite dominating early possession, Leverkusen fell behind against the run of play when Jonas Wind gave Wolfsburg the lead after 16 minutes. Tella had already threatened in the opening exchanges, firing wide from a promising position.
The hosts responded through Alejandro Grimaldo, who converted from the penalty spot to level the match. However, Wolfsburg struck twice in quick succession through Joakim Mæhle and Christian Eriksen to take control before half-time.
Grimaldo’s second goal just before the break reduced the deficit, setting the stage for a second-half comeback.
Tella’s impact became decisive after the restart. His quick footwork earned Leverkusen a penalty in the 52nd minute, which Patrik Schick converted to make it 3-3.
Although the 25-year-old missed a headed chance shortly after, Leverkusen completed the turnaround when Edmond Tapsoba scored from close range to put them ahead for the first time.
Further goals from Ibrahim Maza and Malik Tillman sealed an emphatic win for the hosts, capping a remarkable second-half display.
