‘Mistakes are part of football’: Osimhen rallies behind teammate after shock cup loss

Victor Osimhen has publicly backed teammate Günay Güvenç following Galatasaray’s shock elimination from the Turkish Cup.

The Istanbul side were beaten 2-0 by Gençlerbirliği in their quarter-final clash, with Güvenç at the centre of the decisive moments.

The experienced goalkeeper misjudged a delivery that allowed Adama Traoré to seal victory, after earlier struggling with the opening goal.

The errors prompted strong reactions from sections of the home support, with the 34-year-old left visibly emotional at full-time.

In the immediate aftermath, Osimhen and several teammates moved quickly to console Güvenç on the pitch, shielding him from criticism as the squad processed the defeat.

The Nigeria international later took to social media to deliver a clear message of support.

“We stand with Günay Güvenç. One moment doesn’t define a player, mistakes are part of football,” Osimhen wrote.

“It can never outweigh the effort, commitment, and passion he brings to the team.”

“Football is a game of highs and lows… what truly matters is how we respond and how we support each other.”

The match also marked Osimhen’s return after a 35-day absence due to injury. The forward came on late in the game wearing a protective bandage, but was unable to influence the outcome.
