Brazil booked their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Scotland in Miami, as Vinicius Junior delivered another decisive performance to guide the five-time world champions to top spot in Group C.

The Real Madrid forward struck twice in a dominant display that underlined Brazil’s growing momentum under Carlo Ancelotti, while Matheus Cunha added a second-half goal to complete a comfortable victory.

The result leaves Scotland facing an anxious wait to discover whether their four-point tally will be enough to earn one of the tournament’s best third-placed qualification spots.

Brazil entered the contest level on points with Scotland after two matches, but the gap in quality quickly became evident.

The breakthrough arrived after just seven minutes when Scotland gifted possession away in a dangerous area. Young Brazilian forward Rayan intercepted a loose pass before releasing Vinicius, who calmly rounded goalkeeper Angus Gunn and rolled the ball into an empty net.

Brazil thought they had doubled their lead midway through the first half when Vinicius capitalised on another defensive lapse, but the effort was ruled out following a VAR review for a foul in the build-up.

Scotland struggled to create meaningful opportunities as Brazil controlled possession and repeatedly stretched the Scottish defence. Gunn was forced into several important saves, including a fine stop to deny Rayan late in the half.

The pressure eventually told again in first-half stoppage time. Bruno Guimaraes delivered an inviting cross to the far post and Vinicius rose unmarked to head beyond Gunn, giving Brazil a deserved 2-0 advantage at the break.

Steve Clarke’s side showed greater ambition after the restart and finally tested Alisson through Scott McTominay, whose header was comfortably saved.

However, any hopes of a Scottish comeback were quickly extinguished as Brazil resumed control.

Vinicius continued to torment the Scottish defence and came close to completing a hat-trick before Gunn produced another impressive save.

The third goal eventually arrived on the hour mark. Bruno Guimaraes once again turned provider, slipping a precise pass into the path of Matheus Cunha, who finished confidently into the bottom corner for his third goal of the tournament.

The strike effectively ended the contest and further strengthened Cunha’s growing reputation as one of Brazil’s most reliable attacking outlets at the competition.

Neymar was in tears after his first match for Brazil since October 2023

One of the biggest talking points came in the closing stages when Neymar was introduced from the bench for his first international appearance in three years.

The veteran forward nearly marked his return with a goal, but Gunn comfortably gathered his late effort.

Scotland continued to push for a consolation goal, with McTominay forcing an excellent save from Alisson deep into stoppage time, but Brazil’s defence remained intact to secure a third clean sheet of the group stage.

The victory extends Brazil’s unbeaten start to the tournament and confirms their status as one of the favourites for the title as they continue their pursuit of a first World Cup crown since 2002.

The defeat leaves Scotland fate out of their own hands. While their four points keep qualification hopes alive, the Tartan Army must now wait for results elsewhere to determine whether they will reach the knockout rounds of a World Cup for the first time in their history.

Brazil, meanwhile, march confidently into the last 32 with momentum building and their star players delivering when it matters most.
