Justine Madugu explains how WAFCON success changed his life

Super Falcons coach Justine Madugu has opened up on how winning the Women's Africa Cup of Nations transformed his life, earned him greater recognition and placed new expectations on his shoulders.

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has revealed how leading Nigeria to Women’s Africa Cup of Nations glory transformed both his personal life and coaching career, saying the historic achievement brought greater recognition, new opportunities and a heightened sense of responsibility.

Madugu described winning Africa’s biggest women’s football prize as one of the defining moments of his career after years of serving in different coaching capacities with the national team.

The veteran tactician said delivering the title for football-loving Nigerians remains one of his proudest achievements.

“It is only natural that one will always feel very happy,” Madugu said.

“We all know what football means to Nigerians. For us to be given that responsibility and eventually meet the aspirations of Nigerians was something we were quite happy about.”

According to the Super Falcons boss, the triumph has changed the way people view him both within and outside football.

He disclosed that the success attracted widespread appreciation from individuals, corporate organisations and government institutions, while also strengthening belief in his coaching philosophy.

“On a personal level, it also accorded us more recognition with various awards and appreciation,” he explained.

Professionally, Madugu believes the achievement sent a powerful message about the quality of indigenous African coaches, who he feels have often been overlooked despite their capabilities.

“With what we were able to achieve, we built a reputation not only for indigenous coaches on the continent but even globally,” he said.

“My joy is that we have set the pace for our colleagues.”

Despite the celebrations, Madugu insists the title has also increased the expectations placed upon him.

He believes the recognition now comes with an obligation to serve as a role model and maintain the highest standards of professionalism both on and off the pitch.

“It has elevated our status to a much higher level,” he said.

“We must try as much as possible to ensure that we continue to act as role models to others who will be looking up to us based on what we have achieved.”

Rather than allowing the praise to distract him, Madugu says he remains focused on the future and is determined to continue building on Nigeria’s success.

“I am always focused on whatever is ahead of me,” he added.

“I remain calm and I simply try to do the best I can with the responsibility that has been vested upon me.”
